TWO Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Wednesday, an Army official said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Hajin area of Bandipora district following information about the presence of militants in the area, he said.

The militants opened firing on the security forces, triggering a gun battle, the official said. The Garud commandos, who were part of the operation for training and experience purpose, were injured in the exchange of fire with the militants, he said. They were evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital here where they died.

They have been identified as Sergeant Milind Kishor and Corporal Nilesh Kumar. Kishor belonged to Nashik while Nayan was from Bihar. Two militants have been identified as Ali alias Abu Maaz, a Pakistani militant, and Nasrullah Mir, a local militant.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said these militants were involved in a number of terror attacks in which security forces personnel and civilians were killed.

“It is a big success for security forces,” Vaid said.
The two Garud Commandos who were killed, were part of the first batch of IAF personnel attached to the Army for anti-terror training in the wake of the Pathankot attack.
Official sources said the training of the elite Garud personnel with the Army was part of a range of measures the Indian Air Force (IAF) had initiated to bolster security at all its installations after the terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base last year.

The two squads of Garud personnel, comprising one officer and 13 commandos each, had joined the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps in August for a six month-long “live situation training”, the sources said.
The Garud commanders are tasked with protecting all critical bases and installations of the IAF across the country.
